Here are some tips for filing an insurance claim with your homeowner's or renter's insurance company after a storm: 1. Make the initial call to your insurance company as soon as possible. 2. Document your loss by taking photographs, collecting receipts, collecting credit card statements showing major purchases, creating an inventory, etc. Keep copies of receipts for emergency lodging or for repairs you make. 3. Make any temporary repairs necessary to protect your property. 4. Obtain a copy of all police or fire department reports. 5. If you don’t already have it, obtain a copy of your policy. Read the policy’s provisions regarding what to do the event of a loss. 6. Make sure to file any written documentation required by your policy. 7. Keep a copy of all documents and information that you submit to the insurance company. 8. Save and document all correspondence with the insurance company. 9. Don’t agree to give a recorded statement or a statement under oath unless you have first spoken with an attorney. |

Insurers have been pushing to get states to pass laws allowing them to set up "captive" companies to which to transfer their insurance claim obligations and make their balance sheets look better. Normally, insurers are required to maintain claims reserves to make sure that all possible claims are paid. In addition, these reserves often are public information. These new laws, however, have the effect of hiding these claims reserves from the public in Enron-like fashion. The public, lawmakers, and state insurance commissioners should resist these efforts, especialy in times like these when the payment of insurance claims is crucial for so many people to get their lives back together. An informative article in Bloomberg describes how some insurance companies have attempted to avoid paying accidental death benefits by claiming suicide. While these companies should be looking to find coverage for their insured, they, instead, attempt to find reasons to deny claims. This is especially hurtful to the surviving husband or wife who is told by the insurer that their spouse committed suicide, died due to a drug overdose, or died in some other suspicious manner, making an already difficult time, worse.
